Oozells Street Loop was originally part of the Old Main Line. When the New Main Line was cut in 1827 the objective was to widen and straighten a large section of the Old Main Line canal. This involved the straightening of several meandering sections of the original canal. This left several looping sections of the canal which remained to provide access to established businesses on the banks of these loops.
